AFAIK metacity is the WM favored by the Gnome project. I'm using it on several stations and it is quite satisfactory except for a minor refresh problem when switching workspaces. There are other Gnome compatible WM, this one is a sober one that seems to focus on not getting in the way of the Gnome desktop environment and does it quite well.
