Gnome 2 + Sarge : Which window manager?

I was trying to install:
	metal
	sawmill
and discovered that they are mutually exclusive.  metal wants gconf2 and 
sawmill wants gconf.

Does this mean that sarge sawmill is gnome1?  Any way to get both?
