fake module versoin

hello i am using kernel 2.4.20-686u1205-p2-a 
and am trying to load linux-wlan-ng modules 
these modules were compiled for 2.4.20-pre11-486u1027-sus
would it be possible to alter the version on these modules?
they load fine with insmod -f but not with modprobe. This is a pain as
modprobe is used in scripts.
