I havent used Marillat's source package, so I'm not sure how it works
with all the optional components that mplayer can build against, but
I've found the following packages (from sid) to be what I needed to
build mplayer from source (using dpkg-buildpackage):

apt-get -y install \
  svgalibg1-dev libpng12-0-dev libjpeg62-dev libjpeg-mmx-dev \
  giflib3g-dev libsdl1.2-dev libfame-dev libasound2-dev \
  libcdparanoia0-dev libdvdcss2-dev libdvdnav-dev libdvdread2-dev \
  libdxr30-dev libfreetype6-dev zlib1g-dev libmad0-dev liblzo-dev \
  libogg-dev libvorbis-dev libfaad2-dev libdv2-dev \
  libdirectfb-dev

Some of these from from Christian Marillat's archive:

deb http://marillat.free.fr/ unstable main
deb-src http://perso.wanadoo.fr/debian unstable main
