That doesn't happen to me, but it may be a sound-card dependent thing.
I do have a snd_pcm_channels=8 option in my module options, though.  I'm
not sure if that affects much.

I haven't tried using the Debian sources (I'm just using the OSS
emulation layer), but I assume that it should work, since it's mostly
the same as the upstream source.  IIRC there are a few patches that the
Debian sources include.  I think that selecting the alsa version is just
a compile-time option that's pretty easy to switch.  It's been a while
since I've looked at the sources, though.
