dvd problem - maybe not RPC2 related ...

Big up, the list.

I've just gone out and bought a new DVD player - specs at end of the
mail. The last one I had was, supposedly, RPC2 - region 2 - and the
firmware wasn't rewritable.

After buying this new one, which /can/ be upgraded to RPC1, I
decided to actually check out some of the errors I'd been seeing
before. Did I do this the wrong way round? Uh-huh.

Anyhow, the new drive gives me the following errors on the console
when I try to cat an encrypted .vob file (and yes, I've done the
"use multiword as default" kernel config option, before anyone asks
:)

hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 14059180

Can someone put me right on a couple of questions?

a) Is this an RPC2 issue? I haven't patched the firmware yet, and
it is - supposedly - a region 2 drive, and the DVD producing
these errors is a region 2 copy of The Matrix. Basically, is this
being caused by my drive not ever having been put into a win box
and having some magic done to it by the win drivers, the first time
it's used, or some such thing?

b) Has anyone ever seen this behaviour and solved it? As I said
before, I've googled around for a bit, and just come up with the
kernel config option, which I'd already got selected anyway.

c) Could it be to do with the access mode that I'm using?
I've tried all manner of modes, including the ones advertised
on the player's box (PIO mode 4, Multiword DMA mode 2, and
UDMA/33) with no discernable difference.

d) HELP!!!!!!

muchos gratias,
jc
