wall command only broadcasts to gnome-terminal?

When I do this command:
~# echo "hello" | wall
nothing happens.  The wall manpage is very short.
mesg is y for root and all users.

When I open a up gnome-terminal I then can see
the message and I hear a little beep from my computer.
Using KDE 2.2.2 on Woody.

Why does wall only broadcast to a gnome-terminal and why won't
it broadcast to my KDE desktop?
