2.4.18 to 2.4.19/20 locks up

When 2.4.19 came out I tried to upgrade my kernel, but my system lockedup (hard). So I went back to 2.4.18 thinking I'll just wait till 2.4.20.But 2.4.20 locks up as well. Basically, I'm just copying the .configfile to the 2.4.20 source directory and make-kpkg buildpackage andmake-kpkg modules_image. Where would you guys start troubleshooting thistype of thing?
