This is wrong.  ALSA 0.9rc5 changed to a common VIA driver.  The new
name is snd-via82xx, so Sridhar's original modprobe was correct.

I have an ASUS A7v333 motherboard with VIA 8233 audio.  I haven't been
able to get mine working either.  After compiling several kernels and
many drivers I finally gave up and bought an M-Audio Delta 66 card,
which works very well.

Hope you have better luck than I did...
