You need to install the X window system and some desktop software. The
simplest thing would be to login as root and type the 'tasksel'
command. Choose the "X Window System" and "Desktop Environment" and
finish up.

A Unix system can comfortably (*very comfortably*) be used without a
window system, and that is what you've got right now.
