It has to be said that you do need X, along with a browser (eg.
mozilla), to use the web. (I hate that word "surf"!!) Text mode
browsers like lynx work fine for reading HOWTOs but are unfortunately
more or less useless on the internet. (I occasionally bitch at the
webmasters of sites where every single piece of "text" is a GIF image
with no alt text, but it never seems to make any difference.)

Apart from that, I recommend you learn the command line. It lets you
do far more stuff than a GUI ever could. I use it for more or less
everything except browsing.

Plus, if anything ever goes wrong, and you don't know how to use the
command line, you're screwed. If you do know how to use the command
line, you'll be amazed at how repairable it is compared to a Windoze
box.

Course, in Linux you can sort of combine the two, by running X and
opening xterms. These are sort of like MS-Dos Prompt windows, the
difference being that instead of being able to do less in them than in
the GUI, you can do more. A lot more!

Good luck,
Pigeon
