I dove into the window manager a bit more. There is a gnome applet
(Desk Guide 1.4.2) that gives me a complete window list if I click on
the arrow. XMMS is listed in this list. However, clicking on it brings
me to the virtual desktop (I work with a 3x3 grid) on which xmms is
supposed to be, but nothing shows.

I logged out and back in using kde instead of gnome (simpler than trying
to muck with gnome's window manager settings). xmms worked. I ran it,
and the main window and the equalizers came up.

I logged back in using gnome, and xmms continued to work. But only with
the main window and the equalizer. I would click on the button to bring
up the playlist and it would invert (indicating that the window was
open), but no window would appear. The gnome Desk Guide only lists
XMMS, and the alt-tab list from e only showed the main window and the
equilizers.  ::sigh::

Log back in using kde, open up the playlist, log back in using gnome,
and the playlist is here.

Ok, so it seems this is a window manager issue.

It's true that I rarely clean up after myself before closing down my
window manager. I log out using the gnome button, and leave the
applications to die for themselves. (Note, I don't click the 'Save
Current Setup' button in the logout prompt)

Does gnome or enlightenment remember things like where xmms was last
time even when I don't ask it to?

Does xmms remember things like that?

XMMS does, at least. in ~/.xmms/config, there are the following lines:
player_x=435
player_y=247
playlist_x=710
playlist_y=247
equalizer_x=435
equalizer_y=363
that change when I move the player around and then quit. I'll have to
check those values next time it fails.

I'll let you know if I have a clear answer to this next time!

Thanks Vineet!
