Why wouldn't I? if i understand correctly the initrd image has an initial root filesystem compiled into the kernel (or bootloader?) so that the kernel could effectively boot up into a limited single-user mode even if / were trashed. personally i don't use them myself, but from what i've heard they suck if you have a kernel with a bunch of required modules because they all have to go in the initrd as well, but otherwise don't make that much of a difference. --sean
