Well, I tried that, because XftConfig was limited to just:

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"

and now contains:

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"

followed by logging out, restarting xfs and xfstt, and gdm, only to find
myself no further ahead. A question: I did install transcoded fonts in
around the same time (I am trying to sort out supporting this system so
that two friends - one who uses Arabic, and the other that uses Russian,
can make use of it via ssh), and I must wonder if they are clobbering
something. I see no bugs filed against them, at least.

But this has me a bit perturbed - I run both xfs and xfstt on this
system, and they are both listed in XF86Config-4 ahead of entries for
the font directories, and yet it seems that neither KDE 2.2 nor Gnome 2
are drawing on either for fonts, or at least that I've done something
that clobbers that aspect of their functionality.
