Gnome 2 and Font Servers

I'm wondering if I missed something somewhere in all that was replaced
to put in Gnome 2, but while I have all of the typefaces available to
non-Gnome and non-KDE applications, and to Gnome 1.4 applications, I
have only a very short list offered now in KDE 2.2 and Gnome 2 - just
Bitstream Charter, Century Schoolbook Light, Courier 10 Pitch, Cursor,
Dingbats, Monospace, Nimbus selection, OldSlavic, Sans, Serif, Standard
Symbols Litem Teams, URW Bookman, URW Chancery, URW Gothic and URW
Palladio.

These match up with the contents of /usr/share/fonts/X.font and the Type
1 entries in /usr/share/gnome/fonts/gnome-print-x11.fontmap and are far
shy of the actual number of fonts installed. I have searched for
information on libgnomeprint2, which is responsible for these files and
apparently for character rendition in Gnome2, but that doesn't explain
why the font list is equally restricted in KDE 2.2. This didn't arise
until I started trying out Gnome 2, and I haven't been able to identify
why my font list is restricted, and why it is affecting KDE as well -
just that the fingerprints of where it is implemented is
libgnomeprint2-0.
