BS changed to give ^? instead of ^H?

Did something change "recently" regarding how backspace is handled in
xterms? Maybe it was a terminfo change, and not X related?

_Something_ is different; in the last couple of months I've had a
problem where my backspace key is sending a ^? instead of a ^H. I can't
figure out _where_ this is happening; it happens in gnome-terminal,
xterm, and rxvt as well. If I use bash and C-q BS, or emacs -q -nw to
start it within the terminal and use C-q BS, it shows that they key
typed is ^? and not ^H as it should be.

Looking at xmodmap -pke shows that keycode 22 emits backspace, and
xev shows that the BS key is sending the backspace keysym. xkeycaps
shows that the backspace keysym maps to ASCII character ^H.

But, when I type the backspace key I get a ^? (DEL).

Where should I look for the cause of this? I need BS to give ^H, like
it always used to do.
