I haven't bothered to compile libssl for the x86 boxes I use, but
for my Sparcstation 4 logging in over ssh on a lan improved from
more than a 10 second wait to perhaps 3 or 4 seconds after using an
optimized libssl.

So in specific cases it can be very useful.
