But they are not used, the attributes of the target file are used. Symlinks are purely a name redirection to the destination file relative to the source file. Okay, I lied about user:group _never_ being used for a symlink. They are used when determining if you can create or delete them from a directory and if the directory has the 't' bit set, etc. There a different user than the owner cannot delete a symlink of a different user in /tmp which has the 't' bit set. But it is simpler to talk about the exception to the rule than the rule with all of the exceptions. Bob
