can't start x anymore

I'm not sure what it caused but I'm now unable to start x.
startx fails with following error messages:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error:            bad length in Symbols
>                   Output file "/var/tmp/server-0.xkm" removed
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

waiting for X server to shut down
