WHEEE! I shut the system down, then booted Tomsbtrt and did
e2fsck/dev/hda2,
where the root partition lies.
VOILA'! I can now sum, cat, and less the status file. I can scroll all the
way to the bottom, and back up. Besides, status is slightly larger than
status-old as I suppose it should be. I got reasonable results when I
tried dpkg -l (This is what alerted me to the error). Now dpkg --audit
gives me a list of packages unpacked but not yet configured.
On to higher and greater Woody! via
apt-get dist-upgrade || apt-get -f install
I'll let you know what transpires.
