  make /etc/X11/default-display-manager contain the line
/usr/bin/kdm

  and also check that you have kdm installed. A dpkg -l kdm should show:
  Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
  |
  Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
  |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err:
  uppercase=bad)
  ||/ Name           Version        Description
  +++-==============-==============-============================================
  ii kdm 2.2.2-14 The K Desktop Manager

  The 'ii kdm' means it is installed

  If kdm is not installed, do:
  apt-get install kdm
