You can download and install the java 2 runtime from here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html

After installation, make a symlink from your mozilla plugins directory
to the java plugin directory like this:

ln -sf /usr/java/j2re1.4.0_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/home/_YOUR_USER_NAME_/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

The java plugin should now work.
