True.

For the original poster, kernel-image-686-smp has:

~ $ grep -i reis /boot/config-2.4.18-686-smp
CONFIG_REISERFS_FS=m
# CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK is not set
# CONFIG_REISERFS_PROC_INFO is not set

So it needs to be enabled.  If it is root, initrd needs to be made to
support this. (I use ext3 for the ease of maintanance for all partition.)
