This was the clue I needed.  It turned out that I didn't have
gnome-session installed at all.  After I installed it with dselect,
gnome started right up the next time I started X11.

I'm surprised that gnome-session wasn't a dependency of some of the
other gnome software I installed.  I installed quite a few gnome
packages.

I haven't wanted to use tasksel on this machine because it's an old box
with only a 2GB hard drive.  I need to be judicious about installing
just the packages I need, so it works better for me usually to pick
things out individually with dselect.
