tar --list-incremental problem

i'm trying to use -g to make incremental backups that, when restored, will
not leave around old/moved files. i thought that was the whole point of -g,
but when i test it, tar refused to remove old directories. seems like a
really stupid bug to me. it seems to works as intended for files, but not
directories.

also, the -g file has to be saved somewhere. i thought it was only used for
creating an incremental backup, but it's needed for restore, too. so, i
guess you have to cat the -g files onto tape, too.

i wish there was something that worked like dump/restore. they work
perfectly, as expected. so does retrospective (a mac app), and every other
commercial backup util i've seen. why can't tar or cpio do the same?
incremental backups seem to be more trouble than they're worth, using tar.
