IMHO
currently
gentoo = mega cool workstation
debian = rock solid server

You're summary missed the point I was looking for differences between the two.

For example, I could say:

Microsoft SQL server is much more reliable than Microsoft Excel for storing data, but Excel makes it easier to enter the data. <blah>

The summary of this is not:

SQL server = rock solid server
Excel = fast and easy

Oh, and Debian has more packages which helps out the workstation side.

fair enough
both are linux
debian uses a deb files for install
gentoo uses portage which means everything is built from source on your machine ( an advantage if you
know how to optimize the compiler )

debian has flavors stable , unstable ,testing while gentoo has only one falvor this can be a bad thing or a good thing depends on how you look at it ( if may end goal is a workstation it's good ).

both have a very efficent and painless upgrade proccess .

hope this is better .
