You're summary missed the point I was looking for differences between the two.

For example, I could say:

Microsoft SQL server is much more reliable than Microsoft Excel for storing 
data, but Excel makes it easier to enter the data. <blah>

The summary of this is not:

SQL server = rock solid server
Excel = fast and easy

Oh, and Debian has more packages which helps out the workstation side.
