I use vi with vim.  vi alone has  a nasty way of causing confusion, and I 
feel there is enough confusion already :)  Do an apt-get install vim.  It 
will make vi be nice.

It only takes a few keystokes to edit, delete, save, escape  etc, the rest 
can be gained from the man page as needed.
