apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.* where * is some appropriate string
will get you a 2.4 kernel. Debian does not install 2.4 by default but
you certainly can install it. Apparently the 2.4 series is still quite
suspect according to some and not as stable as the latest 2.2 series.
