I read this; I first tried dselect with no success (only the short error
message from the subject).
BTW: I use dpkg 1.6.15 (and probably versions of apt and debconf from 2.2r5)
(apt-get install dpkg apt debconf   did not work (-> predepend).

Thanks for the hints; I will try these if no other help is available
(sounds somewhat dangerous to me because I don't know what "other important
ones" mean).

I want to relate my problem to that of others:

- I know at least 4 other people seeing the same problem.
