"kernel image not in control info" error ?

Hi,

I am trying to compile kernel-2.4.18 using make-kpkg. Though the
compilation produces a image in .... /debian/tmp-image/boot building
of the debian package dies with the following error :

dpkg-gencontrol -DArchitecture=i386 -isp                   \
                        -pkernel-image-2.4.18 -Pdebian/tmp-image/
dpkg-gencontrol: error: package kernel-image-2.4.18 not in control info
make[1]: *** [real_stamp_image] Error 29
make[1]: Leaving directory`/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18-2.4.18'

Any suggestions as to what needs to be done to fix this.
