Had the same opportunity for improvement here. Not enough room in /var,
but plenty in /home. In /etc/apt/apt.conf I added
Dir::Cache::Archives "/home/gt/aptcache";
Next time, I'll make /var ~500 megs. For now, though, that has solved
the problem.
