Have you done "apt-get clean", to delete all of the old potato .deb packages? Also, I don't know if this is possible or not, because of package interdependencies, but, instead of one monolithic "apt-get -u upgrade", maybe it's possible to upgrade in many pieces with "apt-get -s -u install". Ruthlessly going thru/var/log deleting log files may also free up some needed space.
shouldn't you be doing 'apt-get dist-upgrade' ? Suggestions:Many times the sources.list file has more than one set of URL's for pulling the files. Change this to one to reduce the library + cache size in /var/apt.
Kill the log files as much as possible. maybe you can kill /var/backups/.. or some of them. Also, IIRC apache installs into /var. Do you need that? Can you tar-gzip it temporarily?
