In addition to Moti's tips,

At least for mutt, you can use a URL like imap://[user@]host/[folder_path].

So if you want to view the folder Mail/debian-user on localhost, you
can run this from the command line
    mutt -f imap://localhost/Mail/debian-user

You can enter the same URL when using the 'c' command to change
folders.

You can also store passwords and stuff in your .muttrc, and also use
various hooks to change them on-the-fly (eg for your multiple
accounts).
