Sorry for responding to the response, but I missed the original post.
The image that you want to run is located in
/usr/src/linux/arch/<your arch>/boot/bzImage.
I made this same mistake a few months ago (I was a little rusty on kernel
rebuilds). So change your 'cp' line to
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/<your arch>/boot/bzImage /vmlinux_custom
and that should do the trick.
