It just works, once you tell the client to look in the right place.

What client are you using?
What did you tell it for the path to the folder?
Is /var/spool/mail/peter a mbox folder or maildir?
    uw supports both formats, courier only supports maildir

As a last resort, use tcpflow to capture the IMAP conversation and see
what it is your client is asking for and what imapd is giving back.
