SDL/X Problems

Everytime I try to run anything that uses SDL (mplayer with -vo sdl, 
freecraft, anything else I've ever tried that uses SDL), I get the following 
error message:

X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such 
operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  144 (XFree86-VidModeExtension)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  16 (XF86VidModeGetGamma)
  Serial number of failed request:  17
  Current serial number in output stream:  17

Any idea what might be wrong?
