Help: Nuked /var
Hi,
I won't bore everybody with the gory details:)
I'm running a laptop dual boot Win2k/Testing (kernel 2.4.18-686).
I ended up with win2k refusing to recognise drive D:, which was in an
extended partition with /var (dev/hda6).
Over a period of 4 weeks I tried everything I could think of to fix the
problem - including using Recovery Console - to fix it, but to no avail.
It became obvious that I would have to remove the entire extended
partition.
This is where fate stepped in and a typo in tar led to me only saving
/var/cache.
I did not have the disk space to back /var up to (/) and had to create
the archive in /var and ftp it to my desktop.
The desktop and laptop have similar configurations so I have copied most
of the subdirectories across.
Naturally /var/lib/dpkg has the wrong archive data, but it is pretty
close.
I am very reluctant to seek cds to completely reload the OS.
What do you all think will be the future problems?
TIA,
Tim
