The issue isn't with the packages, but with the packaging. The unstable distribution often breaks due to broken dependencies, packages not being uploaded at the same time, etc. When you install a stable release, you know that it will just work. When you install straight to sid (I did this last week), you cross your fingers, hoping that someone didn't upload the newest foo package, which depends on libbar2.0 which hasn't been uploaded yet (yes, this happens often), leaving you with a completely unusable system. Or that two packages don't have different copies of the same file. Etc, etc. Even testing can break, though it's highly unlikely (but testing also has the well-known problem of having bad security support -- note I said testing, and not woody). You really shouldn't install anything other than stable unless you know what you're doing, and by then, you won't be scared by the names "testing" and "unstable". Getting up-to-date packages to users is not solved by renaming the distributions. It is solved by getting the release delay down to a reasonable time.
