Looks like I'm following your tracks. Pardon, it's obvious, you probably
checked that a thousand times, but... perhaps the modules are OK and the
kernel is old or lilo boots the old one (I never trust automated lilo
installs triggered by 'make install'). Don't forget that even when the
kernel name is changed lilo may boot the old one because it doesn't know
about filesystem, it cares only about disk geometry. Even though you
checked that, try make install, check lilo.conf, run lilo and observe
results. I know it's stupid, but I learned to pay particular attention
on most obvious things...
