GDM (at least version 2.2.5.5 does -- I don't know about earlier) can do
autologin -- although I've never used it, so I can't say how it is.  It
doesn't really matter which desktop environment you actually use.  GDM
should be able to work with it.  (Of course, it requires that you
install some Gnome libraries, which may or may not be acceptable.)  If
you don't want to futz with the config file (which should be easy enough
to figure out), you can run the gdmconfig program, click on the
"Automatic login" tab, and enter the information.
