Re: Can't connect to Internet

A couple of questions, Hans.
When you used pon, did you get a dial-tone? If not, it may be a problem
with the modem settings in pppconfig (or a worse case would be that you
have a winmodem.You could check at http://lhd.zdnet.com
What kind of modem do you have?). Also, remember to add user names in
the advanced section of pppconfig, so that they can dial out. If you
have

If you did get a dial tone, you could also install pppstatus to see if
you are connected to your ISP (of course, this won't help much if you
just have the boot floppies).

If you are connected to your ISP through your modem, but still cannot
seem to ping anywhere, do you have an ethernet support installed as
well? As root, try typing ifconfig to see if eth0 is listed (the
ethernet card) and if the modem is connected you will also se a line
for ppp0

I've found that if you have configured for a local network, with a
gateway that points to a different local computer's IP address, then
your machine will try to route internet traffic through that gateway,
rather than through your modem. If that is the case, then delete or
comment-out the gateway line /etc/network/interfaces. If you don't have
an ethernet card, then ignore my last comment.

Good luck,
Glen
