Dependency problem

Hi
I apologize for the long mail , but i have put in some error output
regarding which I have a ?.

I installed the latest (4.2.0) version of XFree86. I followed the
instructions to install from the Xfree86.org site. I used the install
script that comes along with the distrbution.

After that, I tried to do a make dep ( I was trying to compile the kernel
for a school assignment) , I get the following error:

make[1]: Entering directory
`/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.19pre17/arch/i386/boot'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `dep'.
make[1]: Leaving directory

The error in .depend of /usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.19pre17/kernel is in
line 1 which has a path /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm.

I was wondering if this is because of the XFree86 installation I did. Cos
until now I could compile the kernel with no such errors.

What could be the problem and the fix ?

Thanks in advance,
Regards,
