Re: xdm serving x-terminal: success?

Hi,

is anyone on this list successfully using xdm from xfree86 4.1 (current woody) to manage X terminals? For me it works with servers running xfree86 3.3.6 but not with servers running xfree 4.1.

The server is running a recent woody (about one week old). xdm manages
the local display and is configured to accept direct queries, '-nolisten
tcp' has been removed from /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc and /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers:

-SNIP- <
The client's X server logs:

# hostname

# tail -f /var/log/XFree86.1.log

Fatal server error:
XDMCP fatal error: Session failed Session 58048003 failed for display client.domain.de:1: Cannot open display

I'd appreciate any hint how to fix this.

Thanks,

It looks like you know much more about XDMCP than I do, but I have managed to get XDM working in Woody here on my home LAN at one time a few months ago... probably serendipitously!

I have found that X in Woody is MUCH more "security aware" than before and there are several level of blocks to keep you from using XDMCP. You have covered most of those that I know about. The only other thing I can suggest is to check any EXTERNAL (to X) firewall (ipchains or iptables) rulesets between the "client" and the "server" and see if the ports you are using are being blocked. Also, I have found that ports 5999-6003 have to be "open" between client and server. On normal installs, these are not blocked, but some add-on firewall rulesets will block these by default.

BTW, I have experimented with XDM, KDM, and GDM and have finally settled on GDM here. It is quite easy to setup, and the only downside is getting the "chooser" function working to my satisfaction..
