Kdm refusing to allow keyboard input

I have installed Debian-woody-i386
problem

Debian starts up perfectly and without error messages however when getting to kdm login it does not recognise any keyboard presses. (Capslock will not go on also)

The keyboard is a standard PC keyboard and does _not_ use a USB connection. However a standard PC mouse will be recognised and if a consol login is chosen then the keyboard is recognised in the consol.

After a consol login Kdm will not start up again.

I hope you can help me with this, it would be very appreciated

Thanks for your time

Liam Goddard
