Default kernel versions for both Potato and Woody are 2.2.x.

This would highly depend on which CD you booted with. Each of the first 4
CD's of woody have a different kernel image on them. Most are variants of
the 2.2.x kernel, there is however one 2.4.18 kernel. Rather than trying
to figure out which CD is which (documented somewhere, but there was some
discussion a while back about changing which was which), just make a the
2.4.18 boot floppies. The system will install the kernel that you booted
the installation with by default. Additionally, upgrading to a 2.4.x
kernel after installation is not extremely difficult. "apt-cache search
kernel-image-2.4" will provide you with quite a few to choose from.
