so rip out the winmodem--if that is, indeed, the case. there's no good reason 
not to use an external modem, in any case. whoever suggested that any part of 
using linux had anthing to do with the pseudo automation of services the 
beast suggests it can supply? how could it possibly be a functional box if 
there were any aspects of it that rendered it so os-specific that you 
couldn't load your own choice of available operating systems? how about an 
injection of common sense here?
