Key substitution

Okay, I managed to *create* some baltic characters for the console,
anyhow, using FONTER. I'm expecting I could figure out BASH to make it
automatically install the character set. Later, if need be, I can
export text files, and use mass search/replace to convert it to
something I could send.

However, (1) it would be nice to be able to type these files. Is there
a key-substitution program out there, to change the keyboard mapping?
Alternatively, I have a key at my lower-left that says "MACRO". Is
there some way I could make use of that key?

(2) I have linux on the same box as Windoze, and Windoze does have TT
fonts that include the baltic (ISO 8859-13) fonts. Is there some way I
can import those fonts, and then use them with X, so that I can read my
Lithuanian email with it? I am figuring that the fonts will be under a
valid license, since it is the same computer, and I have a Win98
license.

(3) *minor programming issue* Does anyone know of a GCC routine that
will read the keyboard and tell what control characters (etc) are being
pushed/released? Interrupts and Bios calls were normal to DOS, but we
don't have that here, I'm thinking. What's the library call, so that I
could at least do key substitution within my programs?
