Thanks for your help Kent. The Xfree86-server, xbase-clients etc were installed a few weeks ago as part of the main installation. X was nearly going on this computer-I could see the Debian motif but resolution was wrong, hence updating of these drivers, not the whole system. I was expecting to tackle the dialup once I had X going. I'll have a go as you suggested.

You're right about the home-made CD. Brother has broadband, I have skinny. The CDs are free, he put XFree86 4.2 source & binary on there as well.

Better yet, either get a real Debian CD (Woody- or Sid-flavoured for X 4.1.x), or get your network (modem) connection working. I would

Right from day one, my problems have been associated with the versions that came on install CDs (latest stable iso's of about six weeks ago)-had to update grub from 0.5 to 0.91, now XFree86 etc...
