Because let's be honest, volunteers can drop the ball if they get in over
their head or their real life job or screaming baby etc. get in the way.
And not having money means sometimes things that need to be done take a
lot longer.

But to people who make this sort of argument I say:  Proprietary software
and commercial companies have exactly the same issues.  Only you probably
wouldn't know it because they would fob you off with excuses about "market
conditions" or "strategic directions" etc.  Debian says "We will not hide
problems from our users" as part of our social contract.  And you are
never at the mercy of Debian Inc.  we give you the complete source to the
entire system so if you don't like the way or speed we're doing things you
can fix them yourself (or hire someone to do it)

The really exciting thing about that it will make it easy for people to
make their own mini-Debian distributions with only the packages they want.
